Philadelphia artists who collaborate and share b32

fused glass workshop presentation

I haven’t written about much Art here at unpredictable thoughts now that I have my stella gassaway artlog in which I write about what is happening in my studio and what new work I am making. That space is all about me.

This photo is an image I took at building 32 at sherman mills in the neighborhood of east falls. I live there and I have my art studio there. This image is about the culture of sharing I find so important in being part of the community. Sandy Chierici is one of the artists that has formed a collaborative to offer workshops and experiences to artists and nonartists alike. She hopes to increase the interest in warm glass in the philadelphia area. This is a group of participants in one of her workshops taking a look at a slide show of work in which Sandy explains techniques used in the pieces.

I have been working with the group. I recently designed their identity and have created some marketing materials for them. You can check out the temporary website : b32, a new site is currently under development. It will offer much more in depth information.

Its great fun to take photos and learn about other mediums and the wonderful artists that share the experience.

aRt cards for my open studio [moo!]

These are the cards I’ve made for my open studio coming up in October. (You can read more about my art at my artlog.) How is this unpredictable you say? Well I created a set of images from my drawings at flickr, then they were randomly selected to make the cards. Visitors to my studio will be able to choose a card when they sign in at a corresponding block in my guestbook. There will be more about this story and how it all turns out in my artlog. I just orderd another set of one hundred. Let’s hope the Royal Mail strike doesn’t hold them up.

new drawings : egyptian waters

http://stellagassaway.com/egyptian%20waters/undecidedcurrents.gif
I’ve just completed a new series of drawings. Drawn on rag vellum with ink. You can see the whole series at my portfolio. These drawings are made using a series of marks that make up a vocabulary which when placed in order create a story about water. The marks are a hieroglyphics. A series of marks that when deciphered tell the story.

birthday Fabriano Artist’s Journal

My pal Jayne gave me this terrific journal for my birthday.

I think just looking at it gives you an idea of how wonderful it is — just to have around. Drawing on the paper is FABulous. Even has a ribbon bookmark.

inspirational winter light

This is a photograph of my art studio. This is the wondeful light that I have starting in mid October. My hibiscus has begun to thrive and will bloom through the winter… in the summer they resie in the shade and a lush green without any blooms. October takes the leaves off the trees that block the light and it become an indoor spring. The natural light brings me to different kinds of drawings. I posted this image because it creates a sense of calm for me.

On the wall are some of my drawings that I did over the summer months.

I look forward to the winter weekends here. I’ll sit in my chair, drink tea, coffee, or chocolate depending on my mood. I’ll draw the landscapes of my memories.

I’ve just started getting my drawings up online. You can check them out here.

come in or not

philadelphia open studios

Visitors looking at work in my open studio. It’s really interesting how this all works. If I sit or stand in my studio waiting for visitors to arrive they look in and pass by… but if I step away, maybe visit another artist in the hallway — people wander in.

I tested this numerous times throughout the weekend.

Sometimes I sat in the studio and a passerby would stick their head in the doorway. Some wouldn’t even break the plane of the space in the doorway. If I waved them in they would walk on by. What was this moment of indecision all about? Did they feel as uncomfortable as I did? Did they want to look at my work without me there? Did they want to talk about the work and not have me overhear?

In this image, which I took while standing outside the studio, people seemed quite comfortable wandering around the space and looking at the work. The only thing I could do was disappear. Then they weren’t concerned in any way. This isn’t to say that people didn’t ask me questions about the work. There were many folks that thought my drawings were prints. Several asked about how I actually made the different marks. Many were intrigued by the techniques used.

Stone series : new drawings

stone series number one

You are invited to my studio during Philadelphia Open Studio Tour [POST] for smARTS does POST weekend..

Come see my new work, have some tasty bits, bring old friends and meet new ones. More than 16 of my fellow artists will be participating so there’s plenty of art to see and experience. Ceramics, glassblowing, fused glass, stained glass, textiles, painting, and of course drawings.

This image is one of the nine drawings in my stones series from this summer. Also, drawings from the cosmic plains series drawn on black surfaces which were selected for the Contemporary Works Show, and the latest from my yearly pilgrimage to the Adirondacks.

I’ll be in the studio from noon until 6 pm both Saturday and Sunday October 7 and 8.

At 5:15 there will be a dedication of Kate Kaman’s Growth Rings sculpture at Sherman Mills. This is a breathtaking addition to the local skyline.
