Taller : by Jacob

I was visiting some of my Flickr friends and found this wonderful photo of Jacob’s. I love watching the documentation of the physical environment that informs his work. This room, this chair, this painting, this photograph all are his.

It is a wonderful world.

I was wandering around reading about art on the web and found some very interesting thoughts by Keith Haring. It made me remember how he made art PUBLIC, as public as it could be. That was extremely energizing and all I could think about was art that wasn’t framed, or installed, or protected from the viewer, from the public.

Art is a very powerful thing — for the maker and those who experience it.

I kept seeing more and more of these black spaces, and I drew on them whenever I saw one. Because they were so fragile, people left them alone and respected them; they didn’t rub them out or try to mess them up. It gave them this other power. It was this chalk-white fragile thing in the middle of all this power and tension and violence that the subway was. People were completely enthralled.

This is Pam Taggart. She is one of the most amazing artists I have ever known. She is a small woman whose ever expanding inner world explodes onto huge canvas after huge canvas.

We have been building mates and artist buddies for what seems like a lifetime. We worked together to create scommunity and professionalism. We ate ice cream cake together and she hid birthday gifts like easter eggs — giving me obscure clues for how to find them.

I will miss passing her studio doors and wondering what fantastic thing was taking place just out of sight.
